Cordova & React Native Frameworks

In this article we will explore the build performance capabilities of Cordova and React Native frameworks. We will analyze and compare the strengths and limitations of both frameworks and draw a conclusion in the end.

Apache Cordova

Firstly, lets explain what is Apache Cordova? It is an open source framework for creating cross-platform hybrid mobile applications using web standard technologies like HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript.  Cordova has been around for a long time with a great deal of assets accessible on the web. Also, there are numerous plugins accessible to improve your application. Adobe System rebranded PhoneGap as Cordova. Mobile App developers use Cordova Framework as an open source framework for hybrid mobile app development work.

React Native

React Native is an open-source mobile application framework created by Facebook. It is used to develop applications for Android, iOS, Web and UWP by enabling developers to use React along with native platform capabilities.

Comparison

Let’s compare the performance capabilities of both the frameworks.

When to Use Cordova?

Use Cordova if you are:

•    a mobile developer and want to extend an application across more than one platform, without having to re-implement it with each platform's language and tool set.
•    a web developer and want to deploy a web app that's packaged for distribution in various app store portals.
•    a mobile developer interested in mixing native application components with a WebView (browser window) that can access device-level APIs, or if you want to develop a plugin interface between native and WebView          components.

When to Use React Native?

React Native makes native development on IOS and Android accessible to web developers by writing native applications in JavaScript as the main programming language.

Who is using React Native?

There are plenty of apps that use React Native. Some of the examples are as follows:

Conclusion

It is obvious that both React Native and Cordova have different purposes and each fulfills a different requirement. It is little difficult to say which one is the best. The selection depends on a number of factors.
